Designing for Democracy

The Problem

Democrats Abroad Canada approached me to design an ad campaign targeting U.S. citizens living in Canada, reminding them of their right to vote in the upcoming election. The campaign points the estimated 600,000 U.S. citizens living in Canada to the nonpartisan website, votefromabroad.org, to get their absentee ballots and vote.

The Solution

The design was created to focus on the word “VOTE” with colours and shapes borrowed from the American flag. This design choice was made to grab the attention of U.S. citizens in Canada.

The design was formatted originally for lawn signs and has since been adapted suit various forms of advertising including in a news segment aired on CBC News: The National, and the sides of the city busses in Windsor, and in a video by Canadian artist Alanis Morrisette.

The Results

Democrats Abroad saw a 5% increase in traffic to their website used on the signs, votefromabroad.org, since the start of the campaign. At the time of this writing, the campaign is ongoing throughout Southwestern Ontario.

"We are seeing an increase in the outreach to join membership in the chapter and we are seeing an increase in the number of conversions from people visiting votefromabroad.org to those completing a request for their ballot”

- Steve Nardi, Chair, Democrats Abroad Canada.
